From Windsurfing Heritage to High-Performance Sail Design
The story of SudWest Sails is deeply intertwined with founder and head sail designer Ramses Landman. His dedication to wind and water began at an early age. Alongside traditional sailing, Ramses developed a deep passion for windsurfing—a competitive drive that quickly led to a successful international racing career across the globe.
The desire to master aerodynamic materials and optimize rigs surfaced early. Together with his father, he designed and built his very first windsurfing sails by hand. That was the genesis of a lifelong commitment to sail design, aerodynamic efficiency, and material innovation.
Following his professional competitive years, Ramses expanded his technical knowledge across leading European sail lofts, mastering computer-aided design, complex structural laminates, and precision sail construction.
Born in Friesland: The Genesis of SudWest Sails
In 2009, Ramses established his own dedicated sail loft in Koudum, Friesland.
From this solid foundation, a bespoke line of custom sails emerged, engineered with an uncompromising focus on real-world performance, durability, and blue-water reliability. The SudWest Sails brand was born.
